Columbus runs one of the most uniformly public ALPR networks in the country — and one of the best documented.
Of the 836 cameras around Columbus whose operator type is recorded in the public data, just three belong to a private business. Everything else is a police department or a county sheriff. That is a sharp contrast with the rest of Ohio: Akron records 23 such cameras and Cleveland 33, and in metros like Denver private operators run dozens. In Columbus, almost every plate reader on the map belongs to a government body.
The vendor picture is equally uniform. Of the 910 Columbus cameras whose manufacturer is recorded, 908 are tagged Flock Safety — exactly two are not, one Motorola Solutions and one Genetec. Very few metros are this close to a single-supplier network.
Columbus is also unusually well documented on paper. The EFF Atlas of Surveillance lists 19 separate agencies with ALPR programmes here — more than Akron’s 11, and far more than large metros like New York or Denver, where the Atlas records only two apiece. When the public records and the map broadly agree, you can have more confidence in both.
One quiet surprise sits in the operator table: Delaware County Sheriff’s Office runs 74 mapped cameras, within two of Franklin County Sheriff’s 76 — despite Delaware County holding a fraction of Franklin’s population. The suburban ring north of the city is as heavily covered as the county containing Columbus itself.
